“The most important thing that happens when Viagra gets approved is that it becomes available,” said Steven Johnson, a physician at San Diego Sexual Medicine. “That’s because Viagra works the same way. You have to go back and see a therapist or an associate to get the real thing.”
The Food and Drug Administration is considering levitra, or sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, for erectile dysfunction (ED). But it has not approved it for that condition.

In a statement to The New York Times, the FDA said that the drug “does not have the safety or efficacy data that these studies have indicated,” and that the drug’s “in clinical trials.”
Viagra is the only drug that has been approved for the treatment of ED and is approved by the FDA to treat the condition. Other drugs for ED are also available.
Johnson noted that Viagra “is not the first drug approved for ED.”
